Bowen at the edge of the Coral Sea and Great Barrier reef in the Queensland dry tropics of Australia is a perfect place for sailing and water activities with it's kilometers of beautiful beaches. It is in the center of the tradewind core so steady south easterly winds blow most of the year and even in the Summer there are cool sea breezes from the Pacific Ocean. Bowen is within 140 km of the giant Burdekin dam so a plentiful supply of fresh water will never be a problem no matter how many tourists discover Bowen's pristine shores and spacious hinterland, or how many high tech industries decide to locate themselves in Bowen's new industrial park, or how many farmers may want to grow small crops under Bowen's abundant sunshine. An international airport and marina complex in Bowen, which can be easily constructed because fill material and machinery is easily accessible from the local open cut coal mines in the Bowen Basin to the south west of the town, would soon be working to capacity as industry and tourists world wide found they could do business and holiday in the open tropical paradise of Bowen and the Whitsunday islands and great barrier reef.

WHERE ARE WE GOING TO GET ALL THE FILL MATERIAL TO BUILD THE RUNWAY OUT ACROSS THE SALTWORKS PONDS?
There is a railway coming from the open cut mines to the South West of the proposed new Bowen Airport site that goes to the Xstrata Coke Works. Overburden from the open cut mines could be brought to the site in coal trains that already service the Abbot Point bulk coal port ...

If HOCHTIEF were to construct the airport because of their association with Thiess that manages mines at Collinsville 80 km from Bowen they would be able to make use of large earth moving equipment from the mines in the construction of the airport. There are computers at Thiess in Collinsville that are used for overburden and coal removal calculations that could be used to calculate the fill required at the proposed new Bowen Airport site ...

WHAT ABOUT AIRCRAFT NOISE?
The runway extends from the NW to the SE facing directly into the prevailing South Easterly trade winds. As you can see from the flight path image the planes land over a sparsely populated corridor, and takeoff over Edgcumbe Bay. The town of Bowen is far enough to the side of the runway that noise should not be a problem:

You initiate a flight out of Bowen Airport by clicking the Take Off  button.
Flights move over the image of Bowen until they reach an edge, or until you click the Erase Flight button.
A flight is represented by the intersection of its noise bubbles with the surface of the earth:

pink disk shows 55 or more decibels, ("compatible" with residential use)
Areas with noise impacts less than 65 dB DNL (outside green disk) are considered "compatible" with residential use; areas at or above 65 dB DNL are designated "incompatible" with residential use.
DNL: The Day-night Average Sound Level (DNL) is the level of noise expressed (in decibels) as a 24-hour average. Nighttime noise, between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. is weighted; that is, given an additional 10 decibels to compensate for sleep interference and other disruptions caused by nighttime noise. An annual average of DNLs is used by the Federal Aviation Administration to describe airport noise exposure.
green disk shows 65 or more decibels,
red disk shows 75 or more decibels,
yellow disk 85 or more decibels
Engine Noise - the decibel level measured 450 meters from the source (FAA standard).

Some Stage 3 "quiet" aircraft are: 757, 72 dBEPN; 767, 82 dBEPN; A320, 71 dBEPN; MD 90-30, 71dBEPN; 737-400, 80 dBEPN; and Canadair RJ/CL600, 67 dBEPN.
Some original Stage 2 aircraft have been modified for Stage 3 certification. Those which are in both categories are: 747, DC-10, 727, 737, DC-9, and MD 80. Their official sound take off
levels run from 100 dBEPN(Effective Perceived Noise) down to about 84 dBEPN depending on whether they are Stage 2 or Stage 3, and their individual configuration.
However, it should be remembered that noise levels on aircraft which are landing are often greater than the take off noise level, sometimes by as much as 15 dB. ... dramatic noise reduction? 787 Dreamliner

WHAT ABOUT ACCESS TO AIRLIE BEACH AND THE WHITSUNDAYS?
If a 70km section of motorway was constructed between Bowen Airport and Airlie Beach it should be possible to make the journey in 35 minutes ...

WHO WOULD USE THE AIRPORT?
1 - International and national tourists bound for Airlie Beach and Bowen.
2 - There are more than 2 flights a day from Emerald to Brisbane mostly carrying mine workers.
some of these mine workers would no doubt relocate to Bowen if it had an international airport.
3 - A new Industrial park is proposed North West of and adjacent to Bowen. An international airport right on it's doorstep
would kick start this development.
4 - Export of farm produce, export of live aquaculture products.
5 - Inward freight to service the needs of local farms and industry.
Bowen has kilometers of sandy beaches that can be used all year round for watersports and are the safest in North Queensland for swimming.
Bowen has one of the best climates in the world, with an International airport capital would flow in to the town which would become a major world tourist destination.
